2025 International Training Workshop on Enhancing Climate Adaptation and Resilience through Earth Observation in AO Region

Director, Centre for Climate, Society and Environment (CCSE)

More Details

Message from the Director

"Climate change is not a distant threat — it is the defining challenge of our generation, and Bangladesh stands among the Nations most called upon to respond with urgency, intelligence, and resolve."

On behalf of the Centre for Climate, Society, and Environment (CCSE) at Jagannath University, I extend a warm welcome to all researchers, partners, policymakers, students, and community leaders who share our commitment to building a more resilient and just world.

Established at the confluence of science, society, and policy, CCSE was founded on a clear conviction: that addressing the climate crisis requires more than technical solutions. It demands a deep understanding of the human dimensions of climate change — the communities most exposed, the systems most fragile, and the voices most often unheard. Our work is therefore inherently interdisciplinary, drawing on climate science, social sciences, economics, and governance to produce knowledge that is not only rigorous but genuinely useful.

Over the years, we have had the privilege of collaborating with distinguished institutions across the globe — from UC Berkeley and ICIMOD to Charles Sturt University and the Population Council — and of earning the trust of leading international funders. These partnerships are not merely strategic; they reflect a shared moral commitment to evidence, equity, and impact.

Policy-Driven Research

From heatwave risk financing to coastal resilience, our projects address Bangladesh's most pressing climate vulnerabilities.

Global Collaboration

We work with 12+ international universities, research institutes, and funding organisations across four continents.

Community at the Centre

Every initiative we undertake keeps the most vulnerable communities — and their agency — at the heart of our work.

Our current projects spanning disaster risk financing, earth observation for regional resilience, mental health in climate-impacted zones, and mothers' empowerment through distance learning — reflect the breadth and depth of what it truly means to address climate change holistically. These are not isolated studies; they are interconnected efforts to understand and strengthen the social fabric that holds communities together under pressure.

Looking ahead, we remain steadfast in our mission to advance evidence-based inquiry, inform national and international policy, and cultivate the next generation of climate leaders. We believe that Bangladesh — with its unique experience of climate adversity and its extraordinary human resourcefulness — has much to contribute to global conversations on adaptation and resilience.

I invite you to explore our work, engage with our research, and consider how we might collaborate. The challenges before us are formidable, but the community of minds and hearts committed to meeting them grows every day. At CCSE, we are proud to be part of that community.
